Argos Services Showcased During Shark Week
Sharks are among the top three marine animals tagged by Argos, not only due to their iconic nature but also because they are apex predators. Biologists interested in tracking their movements and habitat utilization have a variety of tools at their disposal, from transmitters that send acoustic signatures to those that communicate with Argos satellites. To collect the data and locations transmitted by Argos tags, we use nine polar-orbiting satellites and a network of ground stations around the globe.
By Shark Week 2025, we will have expanded the satellite constellation by adding 25 new satellites. This significant investment in better understanding our planet’s resources will provide more accurate near real-time locations at a higher frequency. Argos continues to be the only satellite system suitable for tracking the migrations of marine megafauna, and we look forward to the advancements of the system and how they will contribute to further knowledge of these iconic species.
