Hands-On Learning in the Field: A Successful LSPA Course Led by Woods Hole Group

Woods Hole Group recently hosted a sold-out LSPA Field Sampling Course, led for the third time by our Senior Environmental Scientist and Applied Ecology Team Lead, Ted Wickwire.
The full-day training brough together environmental professionals for immersive instruction in sediment, surface water, and biota sampling and, for the first time, introduced climate vulnerability assessment tools and gear. Participants spent more than five hours in the field across coastal wetlands and nearshore waters, learning about sampling techniques and how climate adaptation considerations now integrate directly into MCP assessments.
Int the wetland, participants were introduced to the tools for RTK elevation surveys and water-quality sampling, as well as the use of tide gauges and ADCPs. They also explored adaptation examples around Woods Hole. On the water, participants learned about sampling from a boat, including biota collection tools, sediment sampling, bathymetry and video surveying options. The course provided exposure to the tools and methods shaping modern coastal assessment and resilience.
A huge thank you to Ted, our multidisciplinary WHG instructional team, and our partners at Zephyr Education Foundation for making this another exceptional session.
We’re proud to help train the next generation of environmental practitioners and we’re already looking forward to offering the course again.
