Position Title: Oceanographic Electronics Technician


OVERVIEW

The Oceanographic Electronics Technician (OET) will coordinate and participate in a variety of technical tasks associated with the design, construction, operation and maintenance of scientific instruments and systems. She/he will also serve as a seagoing technician on vessels employed by Woods Hole Group for field operations, as required.

The OET will primarily provide technical support for on-going electronic instrumentation and systems design, integration, testing in a lab setting. The candidate must possess strong computer skills for interface to various oceanographic instruments and will provide design input and engineering analysis for assigned tasks under the supervision of more senior engineers. Working knowledge of data collection platforms and instrument interface protocols along with various wired and wireless telecommunications systems is a requirement.

The OET is responsible for the operation, integration, maintenance, and calibration of oceanographic equipment and instruments deployed on our contracts. Duties include, but are not limited to: perform maintenance of oceanographic instrumentation and ensure reliable operation prior to deployment, assist with the integration and testing of scientific sensors, assist with the development, deployment, and maintenance of company equipment.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated ability to create and document electrical using fundamental engineering principals.

Excellent written and verbal communications skills are required.

Physical duties for this position include but are not limited to lifting above the shoulder, carrying weights, visual requirements of depth perception, ability to see peripherally, ability to vision to bring objects into focus, ability to distinguish basic colors. The candidate must able to hear instructions or alarms. Routine standing, walking, reaching, stooping, bending, and crouching are required for this position. Physical duties are subject to change.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

This position requires periodic travel to support field operations involving:
  • Installation, maintenance and servicing of marine data collection systems.
  • Operate sensors, data loggers, wired and wireless communication systems, and DC power
    systems.
  • Perform shop tasks including the repair, cleaning, painting and preparation of marine
    hardware.
  • Remotely monitor the performance of field data collection systems and evaluate sensor data.
  • Prepare field service reports.
  • Maintain equipment inventories, shipping logs and instrument history logs.
  • Prepare written communication for clients and other team members.
  • Packing/shipping of field equipment, tools, and supplies, travel to/from work sites.
  • Repair a variety of electronic and scientific instrumentation belonging to the company; repair electronic circuits by replacing malfunctioning parts and soldering broken connections.
  • Troubleshoot malfunctioning instruments, analyze causes and plan appropriate maintenance or replacement procedures.
  • Create and follow a schedule of preventive maintenance.
  • Provide technical assistance to scientists and other personnel and advise the manager regarding the selection of appropriate instrumentation for contract requirements.
  • Demonstrate teamwork and compatibility with other staff members, customers and contractor personnel at worksites.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • A.S. or B.S. degree in a technical, science or related program.
  • Strong interest and understanding of the marine instrumentation and the oceanographic
    environment.
  • Previous experience in the maintenance, operation, and integration of standard oceanographic
    instrumentation is required.
  • Demonstrated experience in the deployment and recovery of oceanographic moorings is
    preferred.
  • Familiarity and experience with basic electronic test equipment is required.
  • Working knowledge and operation of PC based computer applications, including interfacing
    with electronic equipment and Internet tools is required.
  • 2-5 years minimum of experience in a related field, or similar military experience.
  • Experience in the maintenance and repair of mechanical systems. Skilled in the use of hand tools, power tools and electronic test equipment.
  • Willingness to maintain equipment and work areas in an orderly and professional manner.
  • Writing, record keeping and documentation skills.
  • Ability to perform fieldwork in a challenging environment and see difficult tasks through to completion. Willingness to travel domestically and internationally.
  • Ability to work independently and professionally in the field and office.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work with diverse groups of people.
