Ecological Risk Assessment

The AES Team of scientists designs and implements aquatic and terrestrial field sampling programs (i.e., sediment, water, soil and biota), identifies appropriate toxicity endpoints, develops exposure assessments, and completes risk assessment calculations. Building from the risk assessment estimates, the Team develops remediation goals and provides innovative risk communication for diverse audiences. Our ecological risk assessors have worked under CERCLA guidance in EPA regions around the U.S., as well as have conducted State level assessments with a particular expertise in application of the Massachusetts Contingency Plan (MCP). The AES multi-disciplinary team of Ph.D. and M.S.-level scientists has worked with a wide range of clients throughout the U.S and the world. Woods Hole Group works closely with its clients to develop objective, scientifically sound and transparent ecological risk assessments. Working with our partners, we can also bring extensive human health risk assessment capabilities to our projects. Some of our specific capabilities include:

  • Field sampling design and implementation (including data collection for chemical analysis, toxicity testing, community assessment and habitat characterization)
  • Spatially explicit wildlife exposure assessment
  • Screening and baseline ecological risk assessments
  • Human health risk assessment
  • Marine, freshwater and terrestrial biology & toxicology
  • Ecological risk assessment guidance development
  • Peer review and technical and strategic advising
  • Natural resource damage assessments/habitat equivalency analyses
  • Environmental impact statements (EIS/EIR)
  • Strategic planning & risk management
